Fantastic start to the year with a jan like we haven't seen for 4 years. Nice, sunny warm and dry... Now within 10 days that's all changed and its snow 10cm, -8 ouch in Pinner.

We think that snow's not such a bad thing, sometimes you just need a bit of fun. Kinda makes its all seem like it should be.

Hi everyone!

Can't believe January is nearly over. Things around allgardening
parkland have been busy as ever!

2011 was a good year all in all. We spent most of the year developing
our lawn care services (lawnplan basic and lawnplan complete). We've
learnt a lot over the last 7 years and lawn care seems to be
something that lots of people want. I guess its to do with the fact
that more people are investing a little in their homes and gardens.

We'd like to develop the business over 2012, and we want to do it
gradually so we can make sure we get it right and make sure we are
providing a service everyone is happy with. During 2011 we invested
in a few smart systems that allow us to know where our vans are, know
what work is being done and we photo document all our work. We think
we may be the only lawn care company using these systems. Its also
easy for us to share the visit information if you want to see how
your lawn develops over time.

Lawn care and lawnplan is our way for 2012 onwards.

Although we're still wondering if its going to snow, it looks like
we're going to have a normal "ish" winter and a nice early spring.
And we do hope that that rolls on to a great summer - it would be
nice

Get ready Watford because allgardening has arrived in town and we're
looking to make things green. As of today we have officially released
a new van to be able to cover the Watford area. We're super excited
about this as we will finally be able to get out to work on some of
the bigger lawns, making more of the world green and increasing our
ever growing network of vans to service lawns.

We know its early to mention it but The Olympics is just round the
corner, well to be exact 179 days, 9 hours, 38 mins and 27 seconds
(but who's counting?). The atmosphere is going to be amazing. For
those of you that want to take part a bit, we recommend that everyone
has a small running track in there back garden. We can help grow it.
Get started on the grass now for a perfect sports pitch.

The last thing is just to say Happy New Year to all, good luck in
2012.

Watching is good if you ask me, I spend all day on my feet so nice to
take a view on the world.

Yes, but only when no one is in the house, favourite song is one
about a drinking cup, I like the words "its like an old friend"

What is your guilty pleasure?
My PC, its the fastest thing on the planet, whenever I get a few
pounds together I like to upgrade it. Only wish the internet was
faster.

Allgardening lawnservice - world tour

Well its not a world tour as such. Phil's been about promoting
allgardening to friends and family. What he's been doing is visiting
somewhere in the UK with Van and all the lawn kit you need, doing
some work in exchange for a few ideas and a nice supper. Our good

We did a week of research, looked at dynamic pricing and built a model, and put a deal through GRON. We sold 6 units - ok were out of season and watford is a new area for GRON.

For us we had calculated that we could 'offer' 600 units at a discount and if we get a customer onto a contract for 12 months worth £580 we would have aquired a new customer for £56 per customer lost revenue.

In real terms this was equal to a cost per acquisition as we would expect across our typical marketing channels. Just moved a few number about....

Customer fall into 2 buckets - those that 'want' the deal and do not expect any type of pre sales advice - the discount junkies and those that understand our product and its a new channel to market.

Typically those that use GRON have been hunting cosmetic, food and lifestyle offers. BUT, as the business develops and more people hunt a bargains so GRON will grow.

NOW, my view, on reflection, I think we did it to try something that wouldn't hurt and I didn't expect much. I feel that the buyers bought not because of the product we were selling but ------- because of the normal sale PRICE, DISCOUNT OFFER, and the selling price---- the deal. All of these were set by GRON - I just asked them for the magic numbers (£81 / 61% / £29).

So.

Will we do it again, sure, its been good to talk to people who want what we do, we know what we do is not a one off and a growing relationship is what were all about. But, if your a retailer, hotel, beauty spa, I suspect this is not a good way to get new customers.

I think dynamic pricing is very important and perhaps something that should not be limited to airlines, petrol stations and supermarkets.

I've always had this idea that a business that is seasonal can be grown and developed profitability using some smart math.

Let me explain, and bare with me as I don't think its going to be an easy ride -

Ok, works like this - yield management or dynamic pricing exists because there are different segments in a customer group, the season is 12 weeks long - so the business slots are technically perishable. You can argue the point but I think its fair to judge it this way.

So, if you have a number of slots and you know how many there are approximate surly all we want to do is book them when "people want to buy them".

This, is where customer segmentation come in. Is it true that there are a number of different types of purchasers within the lawn care sector? Its a key question, who are these people, do they exist and are there enough to drive a profitable business.

Price, the thing with the lawn care / treatments business is - what does it cost? I think its fairly simple to assume that we can all work out a minimum cost and a break even cost. This cost often being pushed as a key marketing message. But, to be honest that assuming a minimum size of lawn / maximum size of lawn. Typically and though my own business I can give you a golden ticket that is - the minimum charge has nothing to do with the real minimum 'actual' and nothing to do with the real 'average' charge.
What these figures are I can not share as they are key to some further assumptions that have no 'actual' rule at this time.

Promotion, so let's argue a point which is do people care what it costs? Yes. Do they thing the promoted minimum charge is high? No. And do they fear the real costs when they get the lawn correctly assessed? No not typically. So could we argue that other than a battle to be the cheapest at a "minimum" there is a fair % of price elasticity? Maybe.

Are you lost yet? Hope not. So the what about pricing in a market that has no real understanding of a real price when the costs are low.
Will people want to get several quotes for the same job for a small ticket item?

Quality of service, surly this is very important and key. Controlling the delivery and getting it right no matter what the price - when the price is pennies difference per m2 to compete on this allow is fool hardy. We have a number of scale able measures that allow us/me to maintain consistency withe every vist from an internal customer perspective as well as external perspective. So, we/i aim to keep this part simple and fluid.

Back to pricing, the point I'm pondering is as a small business getting growth right is important as is profit. And these days price, profit and growth all matter as much as always.
Now, I think with yield management you can look at a business with a fixed capacity but a perishable season as a perfect business to dynamically price. But how does the numbers work out - what is the price? What is the dynamic and when do you want to fill the slots by?

So, if you have 4 seasons, x number of slots, a maximum 'full price' and a range of other prices to give you a 'acceptable' profit. Surly u just need to work out a fully occupied minimum and a fully occupied maximum - split that range by a number of segments, with consideration of when people will book, what's the holiday period, what are the best days of the week, what will be premium, how much over booking you need to do - and build a pricing matrix for the season offering a discount for your 'contract' - discount gets fixed for the year
- payment is for 1 year with contract

Does that make sense?

And its still growing! - and its technically winter

So you think its winter, think again, the grass is still growing and what a fine sight that is too.

To tell you the honest truth, NOT all grass types are growing this time of year. Some of the fine grasses that need a bit more sun and heat have slowed right down or stopped but the chunky perennial grasses are still with us and are growing great guns.

NOW, the good news is because the weather is soo good (sure it's not summer but its still nice), it gives us all the chance to get a bit more work in before December when its gonna get darker...

So, were going to do a little deal on GROUPON for the Watford area. Special discount for new customers who want to get started with a better lawn during winter.

The deal is a secret at the moment so you need to keep an eye on the site GROUPON.co.uk - I hope it will be a good little give away for you to use or give to a friend, garden lover.

How to grow a lawn - part 1 - why is your lawn unique?

Well so many people claim to be able to give you a nice lawn by just treatments - the truth is it takes more than that.

But how do you grow a lawn. We look after a few hundred and its never the same - everyone is different.

In these little posts ill tell you what we do to grow a lawn and how to look after it - and if you have any questions just ask.

When you have a lawn that you want better you have to start with understanding what type of lawn you have TODAY and what lawn you want IN THE FUTURE.

The rule of 1m2. This is a very very simple tool I use on every lawn, every day. Take a look at 1m2 of it, its easy to take a look at the whole thing and say its not very good but if you look at a small bit you have more of a chance to understand what you need to fix.

That square m will tell you a lot, it will tell you what's in the 'grass' - often people think there lawn looks ok because its green. But that green is often made up of moss (there are loads of types of moss), weeds (there are hundreds of types of weeds) and grass (not all grasses are the one you or I want).

So, let's begin.

Typically an old lawn will have a fair amount of moss, a collection of broad leaf weeds and some other weeds, some field grass and the odd worm cast... Or ant hill.

You can't fix all the problems in one go and that's important to remember. The best way to think about this is think about your lawn as an un healthy person. Looks ok from a distance... But don't ask them to run a marathon.

If your out of shape you have to start working on the bits that will make you feel a bit better, stronger, more flexible.

That's like grass, I go about it in a order:

1 - get rid of most of the weeds using a specialist weed killer
2 - get the grass growing (when you clear out the 1st load of weeds you will find lots of patches for existing grass to grow if it can - that's a question to be answered in time) - to get the grass growing you need to give it a good feed, one that will last 8-12 weeks.
3 - cut the lawn at the correct high with a new blade (its a very simple thing to do - change a blade - but so many people never do it)
4 - scarify the lawn, this will get rid of anything dead that needs to come out
5 - aerate - pop some hole in the lawn (typically hollow tine when you 14t do it)
6 - over seed - this is so miss understood, but its simple as an idea. Once you have all the rubbish out put back some new grass to fill the gaps

Bingo - new lawn!!!

Well, I'd love to say its that easy but its not. The main problem is often you have to do all of the above BUT the sequence you do it in may vary.

Nice little hole this one par 2 60 yards. Needs a low pitch to get round the oak.

This is a tricky little lawn to look after, 100% poa - it needs feeding every 8 weeks or goes a bit pale.

Cuts really nice at 14mm - so good fairway length.

Allgardening lawnservice - The 6th hole - URBAN GOLF

Wow, what a great day. Sunny and rainy (how many people would say that).

As part of my growing desire to grow more grass, I've started to develop a few of my clients lawns into an URBAN GOLF COURSE, yes, we really do play pitch and putt! Always ask permission!!?? very private members only.

We service about 15-20 lawns a day, our aim is to make these lawns playable all year round.

What we've done is re-seed some of the lawns with dwarf grasses and a 6 month professional lawn feed. Making sure we cut cut then <12mm and they will hold a nice green colour all year round. They get aerated and scarified upto twice a year.

It's a great little perk, working and playing golf - ALL DAY!!

The lawn pictured is our 6th hole on a Tuesday, Par 3 left dog leg. The tee is pitched up and you have to tee off without hitting the house. Nice.

Phil's lawncare world tour - Cambridge

Alright Dave, about time we sorted out your lawn then? Yer good idea!

I had this idea of getting to see some of my good friends and fix their lawns. (well start the process).

I'm traveling around the UK over the weekends, sometimes kids and Amanda in toe too.

So to kick off I went to see my good friend David Hill (Dave's has a sweet job - Cocoda Ltd is a Sales and Marketing consultancy for the Specialist Confectionery sector. - he sells chocolate "cocoda" - take a look)

With Dave's help, we cut the lawn short - very short, we scarified the lawn, cleaned it down and gave it a good feed (should last 12 weeks and help kill off the moss)

Gonna look much better in spring, gonna need another feed in winter and spring if possible. Should look a dream in spring.

Well it has to be said that not everyday is a working day, well not all day every day. Today we've started work on a new clients lawn in Harrow. Small and full of weeds and moss, and drainage issues and trees and kids play toy and and and - you get me drift...

Its great that we can take on new customers everyday even this time of the season (its not over yet), its a great time of year to get started. Sure is gonna be cold and wet soon but at the moment its sunny and dry.

Ah, did I forget to say that I'm training to jump out of a plane next year 2012, and I'm making use of all the trampolines in our customers gardens to get a bit of training in "in the air". Its not quite the same as 10'000 feet but it a jump all the same.

Some great ideas from Paul today, if you don't know him you will soon.

Whilst cutting lawns Paul thought it would be a good idea to give everyone who contacts us in October/ November a free treatment.

Great I thought, this time of year we do lots of the prep for spring next year, some of you aren't sure what we do? So, why not give us a try.

Paul's the lad who looks after some of our best lawns, he didn't do all the work, even though he likes to think he did!

Paul like coffee and cigarettes and dare I say it Red Bull, but be careful not to over do it on the Red Bull.

Were a small team, everyone play a key part in what we do. We all enjoy what we do.. That's great.

Autumn days

Walking through my local park saw this image of autumn, there is a real buzz about this time of year – if you look for it.

Giving some thought to how well we have done as a lawn care company this year. Its been a funny old year where it was seriously cold in winter, spring didn't rain for 12 weeks and then it was summer, which lasted long enough but wasn't as good as spring, Hey and to think it was 30 degrees 3 weeks ago. Its mad but good.

We've done some great stuff looking for new ways of growing grass better, some good ideas about feeds and grass types this year. Oh and I think we've done a great job of looking after our customers – 99% of people happy. We're working on the 1%.

The highlight of the last couple of weeks has been the customers who have taken some time to tell us what we've done well over the last 12 months and what they would like for next year. It's amazing when we get feedback as it really helps us to drive a business with a really good reason.

After seeing what has been a great season through, I think its definitely worth saying a big thank you to everyone this year (the team, customers and my kind bank). I'd really encourage people to give feedback this time of year or any time of year – make sure we're delivering what you want and when you want it. Phil
